Castiel is quite possibly one of the most interesting characters I have come across in a great long while. He was never meant to endure; hell, he was never meant to survive. He was a clever footnote on someone’s script-plotting journal, probably under the ‘who the heck can we use to get Dean out of hell?’ question. He was most likely a name there first, jotted down with little to no thought of the creator as to just how phenomenal seven letters could become. Because the person could never have known -never have guessed- that the creature who tore through locked and barred doors, stepped over the strongest of wards like they were children’s scribbles, burst every light bulb in the vicinity and then tugged Ruby’s knife from his heart would somehow wedge himself so deeply in ours.

And that was due in a large part to Misha himself. Sure, he read the words already penned for him, stepped where he was duly directed, turned and hit his mark for the shots. But what was not on the page was the quality he would bring to the few episodes he had been contracted for. Misha spoke at All Hell Breaks Loose 4 in Melbourne this year about how Castiel was played a certain (now very famous) way and how in complete contrast, every other angel in the series since has been perfectly fluent in human mannerisms, pop culture references and customs. He mused that it looked like Castiel was therefore the odd child out amongst his brood. Perhaps even the slow one. But even though he might be considered this (and many would argue against such labelling), there is no other way we would have the little tree-topper. Misha’s perfect brand of childlike innocence wrapped up in a warrior of such fierce and absolute righteous power is I would suggest, perhaps the cleverest thing to have come out of this show that deals regularly in the unusual.

Castiel (and by extension Misha) has become a brand. Whether people on either side of the fence wish to acknowledge it, all a fan needs to see in a quiz question, on a shirt, on an add… is a flash of tan trench coat, blue tie and even bluer eyes to know that there is a reference to Supernatural. It’s no coincidence either that the most regularly-cosplayed character at a convention for the show is Castiel. Certainly, there are other equally and instantly recognised symbols for the series, but they now sit alongside something that was never meant to still be there. The baby in a trench coat was never supposed to remain on our screens past a couple of episodes. However, I believe to this day that the cleverest decision (besides bringing Misha back as a regular for S9) was the decision by TPTB to listen to the fans and keep this particular angel along for the ride. Because we loved him. We loved him in those few episodes with a fire so powerful that we plucked him from Perdition and breathed new life into his pages; the pages over the years that poured from the scriptwriters’ pens because we saw something in him worth saving. And they knew it.

Misha himself deserves more than a footnote, but he has probably everything under the sun written about him already. Suffice to say, he is a beautiful human being and has people who would defend him to the ends of the earth and back, even if he never fully realises it or gets to meet them all. He gave us the Castiel we see before us today (in all the incarnations) and he has given so much to those who need much more than a television program. His charity work is renowned amongst the fanbase and IMO, should receive wider recognition. He deserves every praise that can be bestowed on a soul because he believes that everything is just this side of possible… if one is just determined, kind-hearted and random enough.

In that way he and Castiel are very much alike. And we love them both for it.
